That would be drilling holes in the canoe you’ve spent months completing.  It was a necessary task though, the brass stem bands protect the ends from impact.  They’re set in marine bedding compound and the screws are chased in with some compound as well since they are the only fasteners that penetrate the filled and painted canvas below the waterline.  Shouldn’t leak…  I’m going to give the paint and varnish a little more time to cure out before I splash her.

The excess is carefully scraped off and the remaining wiped with mineral spirits for a clean joint.

Ohhhh, geez, are you sure you want to put it in the nasty old dirty water?? It’s so pretty.

But then think about it a few years from now, when you’ve gotten lots of enjoyment from it and how it will look a tiny bit used — and it will be worth a little dirty water.
